What Is a Curl Type?
We define your curl type by examining your hair in its natural state. There are four main categories which typically range from type 1 (straight) to type 4 (coily). We then look at the individual strand which determines the letter and is based on the diameter and texture of the curls. A is finer, B, is medium, and C, is coarse/thick.
Type 2 (Wavy)
2A: Fine, thin, and loose waves that are easy to straighten and have a slight bend.
2B: Medium texture with more defined S-shaped waves. May have some frizz.
2C: Coarse, thick waves that are very defined and more prone to frizz.
Type 3 (Curly)
3A: Loose, springy curls that are often shiny and have a larger diameter.
3B: Medium-sized curls that are tighter and more voluminous.
3C: Tight, corkscrew curls that are dense and coarse, with a smaller diameter.
Type 4 (Coily/Kinky)
4A: Soft, tight coils that have a defined S-pattern and retain moisture well.
4B: Z-shaped coils that are less defined, with a cotton-like texture.
4C: Very tight, densely packed coils that shrink significantly and are the most fragile.
How Do You Care For Curly Hair?
By following these key haircare tips, you can enhance the beauty of your waves and keep them looking their best.
* Use a Sulfate-free Shampoo | Curly and textured hair can naturally be quite dry, using the wrong shampoo can increase frizz and strip hair of the essential oils it needs to stay hydrated. Chat with your stylist who will happily suggest the best products for you or visit our online shop to view all our must-have hero products.
* Use a Wide-Toothed Comb | Detangle hair with a wide-tooth comb to avoid frizz and breaking up the curl pattern. Always start detangling from the ends and work your way up towards the roots to avoid damaging your hair.
* Get Regular Hair Cuts | Curly hair can often become finer towards the tips so it’s important to have regular trims to reduce spilt ends and keep the hair strong and manageable.
* Reduce The Use Of Heated Appliances | Minimise the use of heat styling tools such as hairdryers and straighteners. If you are going to them, apply a heat protectant spray first. You can also try using a diffuser or let your hair air dry to help prevent heat damage.
Use a Silk Pillowcase | Sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase can help reduce friction and prevent frizz.
